Virgin, Child, and Saint Anne van Leyden, Lucas Bartsch 79; The Illustrated Bartsch 79; Hollstein 79a (of b); Volbehr 78; Ottley 87; Lavalleye 97. Monogrammed and dated in plate upper center: "1516/ L". A very fine early bright impression of a print that rarely prints strongly, in fine condition with a little staining verso and with bits of old hinge mounts, with complete borderlines and thread margins. Verso bears a difficult to read collector's mark and the mark of Heneage Finch, 5th Earl of Aylesford (1786-1859) Lugt 58, a distinguished collector of fine watercolors, drawings and prints. He had an especially rich collection of Dutch School prints among which Lucas van Leyden was notable. Ex-collection Michael Berolzheimer. This impression has been compared to the impression at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and is considerably finer and clearer than the museum impression. Impressions of van Leyden's prints that are this strong, early, and with margins in fine condition rarely come onto the market. Indeed, there is not a single museum collection in the world with a comprehensive collection of van Leyden engravings in fine impressions.
